Hennessy-Ward Facade Cleaning Specialists recently carried out sensitive conservation works on the historic monument dedicated to Fr. Michael Murphy in Arklow, Co. Wicklow. This prominent memorial stands overlooking the Parade Ground on Arklow’s Main Street and is an important landmark commemorating Ireland’s revolutionary history.

Historical significance of the monument

The monument was sculpted by George Smyth and commissioned to mark the centenary of Fr. Michael Murphy’s death during the 1798 Rebellion. Construction began in 1898, with the memorial finally completed in 1908.

Originally from Co. Wexford, Fr. Murphy was a key figure in the Irish Rebellion and played a notable role in the Battle of Arklow, fought on 9 June 1798 between the King’s troops under General Needham and Irish insurgents. He was killed within close proximity of enemy lines, and in a grim reflection of the period, his head was displayed on the garrison gates in Arklow as a warning to others.

While Fr. Murphy’s role in the rebellion was relatively small in military terms, Roman Catholic priests who took part in the uprising were afforded particular prominence. This historical context explains why Fr. Murphy was commemorated with such a distinguished pedestal of honour.

A conservation-led cleaning approach

Given the age, material composition, and historical importance of the monument, our team applied a pH-neutral, non-abrasive cleaning system designed specifically for heritage stonework. This approach safely removes biological growth and atmospheric soiling while preserving the integrity of the original surface.

As with all historic structures, the priority was to allow time and natural weathering to work alongside the treatment, ensuring gradual improvement without risking damage to the sculpture or surrounding masonry.

Preserving Ireland’s built heritage

Projects like this highlight the importance of specialist conservation cleaning when dealing with historic monuments. Every structure tells a story, and our role is to protect that story while ensuring the building or monument can be appreciated by future generations.

Hennessy-Ward is proud to continue working on sensitive heritage projects across Ireland, combining technical expertise with a deep respect for historic fabric and cultural significance.
